Chabua, January 2, 2019:

Issuing a warning to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that he would never allow Assam to be ruled by the controversial MLA Shiladitya Dev, best-known for making provocative statements against the Muslim community.

At a massive anti-CAA rally organized by the student union at Dibrugarh's Chabua, the home-turf of Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Lurin thundered, "The Government arouses fear by saying that Badruddin Ajmal will become CM. Not only we will not let Badruddin run Assam, we will not allow Shiladitya Dev to run it either."

"If you have an agenda to make Shiladitya Dev the Chief Minister, keep in mind, this is not your Assam, it shall not run as per your whims. This is not Sarbananda Sonowal's Assam, nor it is Himanta Biswa Sarma's Assam. This land belongs to the indigenous people, they will run it", Gogoi said, to thunderous applause from the massive gathering.

Calling forth the people to people reject the "conspiracy" of the Government, he said, "We have to establish our rights over our own land. Delhi or Dispur cannot snatch this away from us. If Delhi or Dispur conspire to do so, they will be met with stiff resistance."

It may be mentioned here that Shiladitya Dev, the MLA from Hojai Constituency, is considered to be the anti-thesis of Ajmal in many ways -- whereas, Shiladitya's support mainly steps from the hardcore Hindutva advocates within the BJP party, Ajmal's AIUDF has endeared itself to the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, the suspected "illegal" immigrants.
