GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam CM, is arguably one of the most popular figures in contemporary politics; and this time, he has gained at least 2,000 women fans in Upper Assam's Naharkatia town for his resolve to waive micro-finance loans for poorer women.

To thank Biswa Sarma for promising to waive micro-finance loans for women, ladies representing Upper Assam's Naharkatia today turned up at Janata Bhawan bearing a unique gift that is as impressive as any!

These ladies brought as many as 2,000 'gamusas' handwoven by the town's womenfolk as a gesture of gratitude for the Assam CM.

The Naharkatia women also wrote a note for the Assam CM thanking him for his initiative.

Accepting the gift, a thankful Biswa Sarma told the women that the state government has always been serious about waiving the microfinance loans.

"I believe that we will be able to provide some much-needed relief to the poor womenfolk of the state," he opined further.

"Humbled by the warm gesture by 2000 sisters of

It needs mention here that Naharkatia's BJP MLA, Taranga Gogoi, was also present during the handing over ceremony.

In the early months of his first term as Assam CM, the BJP's point-man in the Northeast Indian states is putting an emphasis on fulfilling all the promises that he made to the state's populace -- some of them admittedly 'tall.'

It needs mention that the government has formed three categories of borrowers. The first is those who have been repaying their loans regularly, the second who haven’t paid interest and installments in the past two, three months following assurances of waiver by the government, and third of those who have not been repaying their loans for a long time and don’t have the ability to do so.

For those who have been repaying their loans regularly, the government would pay them a certain amount as an incentive.

For the second category, the government will repay their overdue instalments and also provide them with incentives.

The third category would be those who can’t repay or don’t want to avail the incentives and the government will waive off their entire loan amounts with a few conditions.

Waiver of micro-finance loans was one of the key promises of the BJP party in the lead-up to the Assembly elections in Assam.
