Guwahati, October 13, 2018:

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Saturday said the people of Assam would never accept the settlement of the “Hindu Bangladeshis” and other illegal immigrants.

Speaking to InsideNe, AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said, “We oppose the move to pass the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and we will keep on protesting against it in a democratic way. Assam is not a dumping ground for illegal foreigners”.

He said no one in Assam should support the settlement of the illegal immigrants on the basis of religion.

On the blast triggered by the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I), Gogoi said, "AASU never supports any sort of violence in the state and everyone among us wants Assam to remain peaceful. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) will decide who will stay and who will go. It does not support citizenship on the basis of religion."

He alleged that a third party was involved in a conspiracy to settle the illegal immigrants in Assam and to divide the people of Assam on the basis of religion. He claimed that the Centre too was involved in the conspiracy.

The AASU leader said the Supreme Court is the last resort for the people of Assam as no political party has been able to make Assam illegal immigrants-free.

"We do not think hatred can be a tool to resolve issues. If the government forcefully settles the illegal immigrants in Assam based on religion, then it will be clear that it is trying to be a dictator and this will never be accepted,” he said.

Paresh Baruah, the ULFA-I’s self-styled “commander-in-chief” told a local news channel that the bomb was triggered as a warning to those who are "conspiring" to grant citizenship to the Bengali immigrants of Bangladesh in Assam.

“We are saddened that some people were injured in the blast but our stand is clear. We will not let any illegal migrant to live in Assam. We stand against those people and organisations which are trying to settle the illegal immigrants in Assam and opposing the NRC,” he said.

Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia said, “We are trying to find out the kind of explosives that were used and if they (ULFA-I) triggered it by themselves or outsourced somebody”.
