AIUDF MLA slams Assam Government's move to repeal 1935 Muslim Marriage Act

The Assam government's proposal to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act of 1935 has drawn sharp criticism from AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed. He stated that while amendments, additions, and deletions of specific clauses are acceptable, the complete repeal of the Act is not.

"We are not clear about what exactly the Assam government is trying to do," Ahmed remarked, emphasizing the need for a thorough understanding of the government's intentions before taking action. He warned that AIUDF is prepared to challenge the repeal in court, if necessary, and is willing to escalate the matter to the High Court and Supreme Court.

Ahmed accused the government of attempting to polarize voters and manipulate their sentiments through this legislation. "When it comes to interfering with our religious rights, we will oppose it. This is a political gimmick with no real intention to make a reform for society," he asserted.
