In a demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Dibrugarh District unit of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) commenced a torch rally from Swahid Nyas, Chowkidinghee, Dibrugarh, aiming to march towards Dibrugarh town. However, their protest was swiftly halted as Dibrugarh Police intervened, preventing the rally from advancing beyond the Swahid Nyas gate.
The torch rally, organized by the AASU, was intended as a vocal expression against the contentious CAA.
Simultaneously, the Barpeta district Congress, led by APCC Working President cum MLA Sarukhetri LAC Zakir Hussain Sikdar and Barpeta LAC MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, alongside district Congress president Rafiqul Islam, staged a robust anti-CAA protest. The demonstration commenced with a protest march from Barpeta Rajiv Bhawan to the district commissioner's office.
Tensions escalated during the protest as MLA Zakir Hussain Sikdar and MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed clashed with law enforcement over the symbolic burning of copies of the CAA in front of the district commissioner's office. The clash created a chaotic scene, raising concerns about the intensity of the protest and the potential for further escalation.
