In a decisive operation against illegal deforestation and timber smuggling, Assam's forest department seized a substantial amount of smuggled wood in Kaliabor on Monday. The raid targeted Kaliveti, located in the Shalbari forest area under the northern forest range of Shalnastha.
The operation uncovered a hidden stash of valuable timber concealed behind a house in Caliveti, near the Karbi Hills. The timber, which was secretly stored in a remote location, was intended for illegal sale and exploitation.
Forest officials reported that the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to combat the rampant smuggling of forest resources, which has been causing significant environmental damage in the region. Despite heightened vigilance and recent successes, illegal timber trade continues to pose a serious threat to Assam's forests.
"The department is committed to protecting our natural resources from such unlawful activities," said a spokesperson from the forest department. "We are intensifying our efforts to curb this menace and ensure that those involved face strict legal action."
The timber seized is currently being evaluated, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the smuggling operation. The forest department has called for increased public awareness and cooperation in reporting illegal activities to help safeguard Assam’s invaluable forest resources.
