Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Mohit Hojai today formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. This marks Hojai's return to politics after his release from jail earlier this year.
Hojai today joined the BJP at a formal event held at the Diyungbra constituency of the Dima Hasao district. Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, current NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa, cabinet minister Nandita Gorlosa, MP Horen Sing Bey, NCHAC chairperson Ranu Langthasa and others were present during the event.
Speaking to media after joining the BJP, Hojai said that he is keen to work faithfully for the party. He also said that if the party grants him a ticket, he would like to contest from the West Maibang seat for the next NCHAC elections.
"Today I have joined the BJP. It is a good day for me. After spending 14 years in jail and now joining the BJP is like a rebirth for me. I shall work dedicatedly for the party. If the people want and the party agrees, then I shall contest the elections. People want that I should contest from the Maibang West constituency. It is all a matter of time because of which I have joined the BJP," said Hojai.
Earlier this year in August, in a judgement, the High Court acquitted Mohit Hojai along with former militant turned politicians Jewel Garlosa and Niranjan Hojai. All of them were jailed in the Guwahati Central Jail after National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in 2017 awarded them life imprisonment in two cases.
