In Bongaigaon district, hoardings featuring photographs of Khalistani rebel Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale sparked controversy, leading to swift police intervention.
The hoardings, prominently displayed in front of two-line hotels along NH 27 in Chauraguri and Goroimari, drew attention and criticism on social media.
Owned by Gourmukh Singh and Siraj Ali respectively, the line hotels - Khalsa Hotel and U.P. PUNJAB HARIYANA Line Hotel - became focal points of concern due to the presence of the controversial imagery.
Responding to public outcry, the Chirang district committee of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJP) took action, with a group of youth BJP functionaries, led by Chirang district youth BJP president Rakesh Das, informing the Gerukabari police station about the situation.
The Gerukabari police promptly arrived at the scene, removing the hoardings bearing the Khalistani rebel photos from the front of the two hotels. The authorities seized the hoardings and transported them to the Gerukabari police station for further investigation.
In addition to the removal of the hoardings, the police detained Gourmukh Singh, the owner of Khalsa Hotel, for questioning regarding the display of the controversial imagery.
The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding symbols and imagery associated with divisive movements, prompting swift action from local authorities and community leaders to address public concerns and maintain peace in the region.
