The Maha Ashtami celebrations today were observed with full traditional fervour at the historic Devi Dol temple in Assam's Sivasagar district.
Scores of people gathered at the premises of the temple to take part in the religious ceremonies. A special feature of Maha Ashtami festivities at the Devi Dol is the practice of animal sacrifice. Scores of people came over to take blessings on the day with some of them also bringing with them their livestock to offer as sacrifice to the mother goddess.
The temple authorities are taking in a donation of Rs 50 in lieu of sacrificing a duck and Rs 100 for sacrificing a goat.
Later in the day, the age old tradition of giving a portion of the puja offerings will be carried out to the Muslim Doullah family and the family of the Barpatra Gohain. While the Barpatra Gohain were one of the main ministers in the erstwhile Ahom kingdom, the Doullah family has been traditionally associated with beating the drums during festive occasions at the temples of Devi Dol and Shiva Dol.
Meanwhile, temple authorities exuded happiness at the turnout of devouts today.
"We have seen that a lot of people have turned up since morning at the Dol premises. Since last year, the turnout this year has been much better. We believe all those who are offering prayers and sacrifices today will get their wishes fulfilled," said a temple committee member.
