Tension prevails at Makum village, makumkilla under 83 number Margherita Constituency of Tinsukia district when an elderly man was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Nov 2.
A wild elephant that had ventured out of the woods in search of food at Nizmakum village, Makumkilla in Margherita, a 75 year old man named Dadu Purti was trampled to death by the wild elephant in front of his residence.
The entire incident has created a sensation in the area.
Local residents of this area said that in the recent past the villagers have had to spend sleepless nights as wild elephants have been regularly terrorised in the area as due to rampant deforestation they stray near our village in search of food.
Meanwhile, Margherita west range forest department personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Till filling of this report the corpse has been send to Tinsukia Civil Hospital for post mortem and further investigation is going on.
