Over 300 families in Bamuni Pathar, located in Assam's Kaliabor district, have been grappling with a severe drinking water crisis for the past three months. Residents have been left with no choice but to rely on water from streams and wells after the collapse of a water supply scheme meant to serve the area.
The water supply scheme, built nearly three years ago by the Public Health Technical Department to provide clean drinking water to the greater Bamuni area, has been nonfunctional for months due to faulty pumps. Local residents claim the scheme, once promising relief, has turned into a "foam" due to mismanagement and neglect.
Despite repeated appeals to authorities, including the Development Block of Kaliabor, Hatbor Gram Panchayat, and the Public Health Technical Department, no action has been taken to resolve the crisis. Frustrated residents even escalated the matter to their local MLA, whose recommendations to the department have reportedly been ignored.
“We have been left to drink unsafe water from local juris and wells. This is not just an inconvenience but a serious health risk,” a local resident expressed.
As the crisis continues, the affected families are urging the authorities to take immediate action to repair the pumps and restore the water supply scheme to alleviate their suffering.
