A major inconvenience has struck the Dr. Phani Bhushan Roy Memorial Girls’ Hostel of Bholanath College (Autonomous), Dhubri — one of Assam’s premier educational institutions — as electricity and water supply have come to a complete halt due to non-recharge of the hostel's smart electricity meter.
According to reports, the smart meter recharge, which is the responsibility of the college authorities, has not been carried out even after the last recharge expired. As a result, the hostel, which accommodates over 100 students, has been left without electricity for several days.
Vivek Prasad, general secretary of the Students’ Union, confirmed the issue and expressed concern over the students' plight. The power cut has also led to the stoppage of water pumps, resulting in a complete lack of water supply in the hostel.

The situation has worsened as many students, who had gone home for Bihu celebrations, returned to the hostel only to find it without basic amenities like electricity and water. Unable to stay under such conditions, several students were reportedly forced to return to their homes again.
“What is even more troubling,” said a student representative, “is that we pay the fixed hostel fees regularly. Then why wasn’t the meter recharged on time?”
Meanwhile, the general secretary of the Students’ Union has openly criticized the college principal, Dr. Kishore Kumar Shah, for showing apathy towards the issue and not taking timely action to address the crisis.
Students are now demanding immediate intervention by the college administration and a clear explanation regarding the mismanagement of hostel maintenance funds.
