Tensions flared in Nazira today as the All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATAASU) Sub-Divisional Committee staged a fiery protest against Assam Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader and MLA Debabrata Saikia, burning his effigy in his own constituency.
The protest was triggered by allegations that Saikia made disrespectful remarks against the Ahom community, reportedly mocking the community’s traditional attire by referencing the wearing of 'lungis'.
ATAASU condemned the comments as insulting and demanded an immediate public apology from the veteran Congress leader.

“We will not tolerate any insult to the pride and identity of the Ahom people. Unless Debabrata Saikia issues a formal apology, ATAASU will continue its protests across various regions,” said an ATAASU spokesperson at the demonstration.
The protesters, holding placards and chanting slogans, warned of escalating agitation across Assam if their demands are not met. The union has vowed to launch similar protest programmes at the regional level until justice is served.
This incident adds to growing political tensions in the state, as cultural sentiments and community pride take centre stage in public discourse. Saikia is yet to issue a statement addressing the controversy.
