Tea garden workers and their families protested in Assam's Titabar today protested over the lack of drinking water facilities in their tea garden areas. Slogans against the government and local MLA Bhaskarjyoti Barua were raised as the tea garden workers alleged that they have to face a daily struggle to get clean drinking water.
Workers and their families of the Mejenga tea estate came out on the highway and raised the banner of protest as they questioned the authorities for not providing them with drinking water connection even as the government has been promoting the concept of drinking water to every household under the much publicised Jal Jeevan Mission.
The tea garden workers and their family members are being forced to get water for themselves from a pond within the tea garden area. However, that has not worked well for them for many persons including minors have fallen sick after consuming the water.
Today workers of the Mejenga tea estate held the protest and questioned the authorities as to why they have ben deprived from clean drinking water.
"Inspite of various schemes from the government for water supply, people of the Mejenga tea estate are being forced to drink the water from a dirty pond. Several children have fallen sick after consuming the water. We have informed the MLA about the situation but so far no action has been taken," said a protestor.
