A hit-and-run incident spiraled into a frenzy in Silchar's Janiganj area as enraged locals took matters into their own hands, vandalizing the vehicle and assaulting its driver. The chaotic scene unfolded after a four-wheeler, bearing registration number AS 11AB 8688, triggered an accident in Rongpur and then recklessly sped through Janiganj, crashing into multiple vehicles, including one owned by a Cachar election official.
The driver, identified as Suhail Ahmed from Sonai Uttar Mohanpur in Cachar, attempted to evade capture, but the panicked and furious crowd quickly intervened. According to eyewitnesses, even after being stopped, Ahmed made a desperate attempt to escape, driving erratically through the packed street, which further provoked the already agitated crowd. In a fit of rage, residents surrounded the vehicle, smashed its windows, and physically assaulted Ahmed before the police could take control of the situation.
Despite the arrival of the police at the spot, the chaos did not subside immediately. The vehicle continued to ram into goods and items lying along the roadside, adding to the mayhem. The driver was eventually detained by the police.
