In a significant development, Assam Police detained two persons under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 for allegedly transporting an endangered giant tortoise.
When the accused, identified as Ujjal Gogoi and Divya Gogoi, were transporting the tortoise, people sitting in an Oil India Limited bus along forest official saw them at Madhabpur Tinali under the jurisdiction of the Duliajan police station.
Later, the occupants of the bus swiftly loaded the sack containing the endangered species and continued their journey.
Meanwhile, Saraipung Forest Range officials have announced that the rescued tortoise will be relocated to a secure location with the approval of the court. The animals will undergo a comprehensive medical examination to ensure their well-being during the transition.
The reports also claimed that a summon would be issued to all individuals present on the bus during the transportation of the endangered species, as confirmed by the Saraipung forest range official.
Local residents, in a collective plea to the forest department, police authorities, and Oil India Limited, have urged immediate and stringent action to prevent any potential harm to the rescued animals.
