Political tensions escalated in Gauripur just days before the panchayat elections following an alleged attempt to assault Ranjit Kumar Roy, the BJP president of Dhubri district. The incident occurred during a campaign event, drawing strong reactions from party workers and triggering prompt police action.
According to sources, a group of 14 to 15 individuals on motorcycles reportedly chased Roy’s Bolero vehicle for nearly 15 kilometers from Moterjhar towards Gauripur. The chase culminated near the under-construction NH-127(B) highway close to Shikaritari, where the miscreants allegedly attempted to intercept and attack the vehicle. During the pursuit, the vehicle reportedly struck a sheep.
The situation further escalated at the busy Chowrangimore market in Gauripur, where the mob allegedly tried to physically assault the BJP leader. However, swift intervention by local police prevented any harm and successfully dispersed the crowd.
BJP workers claimed that the attackers carried party flags and symbols, suggesting an attempt to intimidate Roy and disrupt the campaign trail. They denounced the incident as a politically motivated act aimed at unsettling the election atmosphere and demanded immediate legal action.
In response, Gauripur police have arrested two suspects — Aashiq Iqbal of Baniamari village and Anwar Ali of Debotar Hasdah village. Both individuals are currently in custody, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Gauripur police station. Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend the remaining individuals involved.
