In the wake of recent protests near Raj Bhawan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced new measures to regulate demonstrations in the state capital.
Addressing a press briefing following the weekly Cabinet meeting, the CM declared that protests near Raj Bhawan would no longer be permitted and would instead be restricted to designated areas.
Referring to an incident on December 18, where protestors reportedly attempted to dismantle police barricades, Sarma confirmed that Guwahati city police would initiate a probe into the matter.
"Regarding yesterday's incident, the people or protestors who tried to dismantle police barricades, the city police will start a probe," he said.

The CM further alleged that the Congress party has been attempting to create unrest in Guwahati for an extended period, referencing similar incidents in Khanapara before the Lok Sabha elections.
"In some way or the other, the Congress party is trying to create unrest in Guwahati. This is the third or fourth attempt," Sarma remarked while questioning the motives behind such actions.
The move to regulate protest locations comes amidst growing concerns over public safety and law and order in the city.
The state government’s decision aims to balance the democratic right to protest with the need to maintain peace and avoid disruptions in sensitive areas like Raj Bhawan.
