Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, strongly criticized the government while speaking on the Waqf Amendment Bill. He accused the ruling party of attempting to malign a community that played a crucial role in India's freedom struggle.
Directing the Central government, Gogoi questioned the intent behind the legislation, stating, “What message does the government want to convey? The community that fought for India's independence and sacrificed alongside Mangal Pandey in 1857 is now being targeted. When you were writing mercy petitions to the British and not supporting the Quit India Movement, this community stood firmly with the movement.”
Further emphasizing historical contributions, he stated that the community had outrightly rejected Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s two-nation theory in 1924 and had always stood for national unity. He accused the government of indulging in "divide and rule" tactics, asserting that, for Congress, nationalism means unity rather than creating divisions.
His remarks come amid an intense debate over the Waqf Amendment Bill, which has sparked political and communal discourse across party lines.
