Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the importance of self-reliance in education during his address at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University. He stressed the need for universities to adopt self-financing models to reduce dependence on government funds and navigate challenges effectively.
Sarma highlighted the significance of financial stability in education, citing examples of how external factors like natural calamities can impact government finances, limiting their ability to support educational initiatives fully. He underscored the necessity for universities to stand on their own feet financially to ensure continuity and quality in higher education.
"Higher education is as indispensable as standing on one's own feet," Sarma remarked, advocating for a shift in the financing patterns of universities. He praised Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University for its success in self-financing, citing it as an exemplary model for others to follow.
The Chief Minister outlined plans to introduce scholarship programs ranging from 100% to 50% coverage to ensure equitable access to education, particularly for lower-income groups. He sated the need to allocate limited national resources effectively, targeting assistance toward those most in need.
