19-Year-Old Dies in Tripura Police's Custody

Agartala, November 2, 2019:

Mangal Das, aged 19, died in police custody in Tripura. He was from South Matabari area under Radha Kishorepur police station and allegedly died while in police remand for involvement in a theft case.

Locals alleged that Mangal was caught in connection with a theft at a house in Dhwajanagar locality and a mob handed him over to the local police station and he was produced in Court on 24 October.

From the Court, he was sent to seven days' police remand. On 31 October, police called his mother to come to Gomoti district hospital and told her that her son was seriously ill. The mother of the deceased has alleged that after the phone call, she rushed to the hospital and found that her son was dead.

Das's mother pointed fingers at Radha Kishorepur police and held them accountable for Mangal’s death. His mother also alleged that on 24 October, the accused was nabbed from his house in Amar Nagar and was soundly thrashed in front of his family members.

Tripura Congress leadership, lead by Soumitra Biswas, visited the victim's house on Friday and talked with the family members. Congress also condemned the incident.

Mangal’s mother who lost her husband years back and lost her four children and now, her only remaining child has also dies. She is seeking justice, she told reporters.
