JAIPUR:  At least 20 persons have been killed in Rajasthan due to lightning strikes on Sunday and more than 10 persons were injured.

11 people from Jaipur, three from Dholpur, four from Kota, one from Jhalawar, and one from Baran were among the dead.

Moreover, total of 17 persons were said to have been injured in the lightning strikes in several districts in the state.

They were rescued by police and State Disaster Response Force units working together (SDRF). 

The injured were brought to Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital.

The incident took place when heavy rains pounded different parts of the state, sky lightning struck several parts of Rajasthan, signaling the arrival of the monsoon in the desert state.

Meanwhile, prime minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the deaths.

"Many people have lost their lives due to lightning in some areas of Rajasthan, which is very saddening. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased," PM Modi tweeted in Hindi.

On the other hand, state chief minister Ashok Gehlot has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the family members of those who were killed in lightning strikes.

Yesterday not only in Rajasthan but also in Madhya Pradesh, seven persons were killed by severe lightning in various parts.
