CHHATTISGARH: At least 4 people were killed while 15 others were injured after a speeding car ploughed into people who were preparing to immerse a Durga idol in Pathalgaon, Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh on Vijaya Dashami.

"Four people have died, with more than 15 more in critical condition. Around 8-9 of them have suffered major injuries," said police.

According to reports, at around 1.30 p.m., the immersion procession left Pathalgaon when a maroon-colored Sumo plowed into it, tossing people around "like footballs" and crushing others, including teenagers who died on the spot.

One deceased has been identified as Gaurav Agarwal, a 21-year-old man, while the identity of the other dead has yet to be determined.

Vijay Agarwal, the Superintendent of Police in Jashpur, told the media that the irresponsible motorist was caught by the public and thrashed.

The car, which was set on fire by the irate people, also contained a large amount of ganja.

Radheshyam Vishwakarma, 21, and Shishupal Shahu, both from Madhya Pradesh, were alleged to be in the car, according to a police officer. Both have been taken into custody.

Locals were outraged by the act, and the body of the young man was found blocking the Gumla-Katni roadway.

As more people from the surrounding areas arrived, police official stated the situation was becoming critical.

"We were able to maintain control of the situation in some way. However, people are still there on the scene. Senior government officials have also arrived, "he added.
