Assam Rifles nab one in dry state Mizoram with liquor & pistol

LAWNGTLAI: Troopers of the Assam Rifles last night apprehended a person for illegally possessing a weapon. The accused Lalrinawmi, 50, was picked up from his residence at Lawngtlai Bazar in Lawngtlai district of Mizoram.

A .22 pistol and as many as 200 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from the possession of the accused. The seized items are valued at over Rs 1 lakh.

The Assam Rifles later handed Lalrinawmi along with the seized items to the Lawngtlai police.

A case 22/21 dated 16/4/21, u/s 25(1b)(a) arms act 1959, has been registered, against the accused.

Meanwhile, the police have forwarded the accused to the court after which he was sent to judicial custody.

Cases of smuggling of contraband are on the rise in Mizoram. Smuggled goods often find their way to India through the porous border state.

Lawngtlai district is located in the south western part of the state having international boundaries with Bangladesh to the west and Myanmar to the south.
