NEW DELHI: As India's coronavirus disease tally crossed the 11 million mark on Monday, the Centre has asked states and Union Territories to step up the pace of the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination process for healthcare workers so that the same can begin for those who are above 50 years of age.

 

On Sunday, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories asking them to advise staff involved in the vaccination campaign to increase the number of days planned for inoculation to four days a week as soon as possible.

He also asked hospitals to step up their vaccination campaigns so that elderly people with comorbidities can begin the inoculation process from March 1.

 

According to data from the Union Health Ministry, India's total COVID-19 cases surpassed 1.10 crore on Monday, with 14,199 new infections reported per day, while active cases recorded a rise for the fifth consecutive day.

 

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country stands at 1,10,05,850, while the death toll increased to 1,56,385 with 83 daily new fatalities.

 

The recovery rate is 97.22 per cent -- a fairly high number.
