NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced important welfare initiatives to help residents of Delhi who are suffering from the COVID-19 outbreak.

This was announced in a press conference, where Kejriwal announced that his government has decided that all 72 lakh ration card holders in the national capital will be given free ration for the next two months.

"The poor people are struggling with the financial crisis due to Corona lockdown. To help them at this time, the Delhi government will give free ration to the 72 lakh ration card holders living in Delhi for the next two months," CM Kejriwal wrote on Twitter in hindi.

 

The chief minister said although the lockdown may not last for two months, but the Delhi government has extended assistance to the poor to ensure food and livelihood during the tough times of COVID-19.

"It is only being done to assist the vulnerable who are experiencing financial difficulties," the chief minister said

Both autorickshaw and taxi drivers in Delhi will be given Rs 5,000 each by the Delhi government as a support during this financial crisis.

The Kejriwal government also provided financial assistance to autorickshaw and taxi drivers last year.

Recently, the Delhi government extended the lockdown till May 10.

In the last 24 hours, Delhi reported 18,043 COVID-19 cases, the lowest number since April 15.

However, it set a new high with 448 fatalities, the third day in a row that COVID-19 deaths exceeded 400.

As of yesterday, Delhi had recorded 12,12,989 cases and 17,414 deaths.
