AGARTALA: Crimes against women in Tripura have been reduced by 18.41 per cent last year following 2019, said chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb yesterday in the assembly.

In response to CPI-M MLA and former minister Bijita Nath's calling attention notice, the chief minister said that there has been a steady decline in crimes against women over the years.

Last year, rape cases were reduced to 15.4 percent, molestation to 21.3 percent, abduction to 20.3 percent, dowry-related death to 39.5 percent, other atrocities to women to 21.2 percent, and eve-teasing to 40 percent, he said.

However, the government is dissatisfied, as it aims to reduce it to zero, he added.

Besides that, several steps have been taken to encourage police officers to respond quickly to such crimes.

CM Deb asserted that steps including the mobilisation of the emergency response support system, smart policing, security patrolling, and beat policing have been taken across the state to combat crime against women.

The state government has made it clear to law enforcement officials that there should be no softening in the suppression of evidence about crimes against women, as well as requiring police to file charge sheets quickly following Supreme Court guidelines.

He said that to help victims and ensure appropriate penalty for the accused on time, he has recruited female police volunteers and launched a pilot project in West Tripura and Gomati districts to combat crime against women.
