Earthquake of 5.1 magnitude hits Manipur

An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Manipur in the wee hours of Tuesday. National Centre for Seismology (NCS) informed that the earthquake occurred 55 km east of Ukhrul in Manipur. The earthquake occurred at 02:39 am. “An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred 55 km east of Ukhrul, Manipur at 2:39 AM today,” the NCS said. 

The earthquake tremors triggered panic among the people who ran out of the houses in search of a safer place. However, no case of casualty or damage have been reported so far.

It needs mention that the northeastern region falls under the seismic 5 zone. Occurrence of earthquake is a common phenomenon in the region.

It may be mentioned that an earthquake of 3.7 magnitude on the richter scale hit Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh early on August 24. The earthquake hit the district at 3.36 am. However, no case of casualty or damage have been reported. Another earthquake of 3.0 magnitude on the richter scale hit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh on August 6. However, it too did not cause any damage.
