SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Police today issued helpline numbers for the people who are stuck in Shillong amid the unrest in the state's East Khasi Hill district.
Discontent and anger have been simmering in the area following the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew’s killing last Friday.
The Meghalaya Police shared the helpline numbers on the microblogging site Twitter.

"Helpline Numbers for citizens stranded in Shillong. Kindly reach out to these numbers for any kind of assistance," Meghalaya police tweeted from its official handle.
Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tasked his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma with helping Assamese people who are stuck in the state capital in the midst of the ongoing ‘total curfew’ in several areas of the city.
The move comes after a report a resident of Assam whose Twitter handle goes with the name 'Hrishiraj B' being stuck along with his wife and 4-year-old child in the Meghalaya capital has emerged on Twitter.
The Twitterati sought CM Sarma’s help to return from Shillong.
"My wife and 4-yeard-old son are stuck in Shillong. Unable to find any secured way out. Several other people from Assam are also stuck in Shillong. Please help. The situation is getting worse," Hrishiraj B tweeted.

Later, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was tagged in the post, replied to the tweet tagging Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with the following words: “For your information and necessary action @SangmaConrad.”
It is to be mentioned that Assam police have urged citizens to refrain from travelling to the neighbouring state in view of the deteriorating law and order scenario in the state.
Curfew has been imposed in Shillong due to Law and Order issues.
People from Assam are advised not to travel to Shillong till curfew continues,” Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Assam’s special DGP (Law & order) tweeted yesterday evening.
The ongoing total curfew in several parts of Meghalaya capital Shillong has been extended 24 hours -- till 5 am on August 18.
