New Delhi, December 17, 2019:

Zee News Editor-in-Chief and 'king of controversy' Sudhir Choudhury has landed in the soup after announcing on live television that Imphal is the capital of Meghalaya.

Choudhury made the embarrassing gaffe while presenting details about the prevailing volatility in the Northeast after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. In the video that has been widely circulated on social media platforms, Choudhury can be heard saying: "Pradarshano ki aisi bhi tasveerein Meghalaya ki rajdhani Imphal se bhi aayi hain" (such pictures from the protests have also surfaced from the Meghalaya capital Imphal).

This is a grave error indeed, as the Shillong, and not Imphal, is the capital city of Meghalaya. Choudhury has been severely trolled by netizens after the embarrassing gaffe on live television, and he has been condemned for his "lack of knowledge" about the Northeast Indian States.

It may be mentioned here that Choudhury is no stranger to controversy, as he is known to make reckless statements on live television, due to which he is often trolled and rebuked.

Earlier this year, Chaudhary accused Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra of plagiarising speech of Truman Longman pointing out early signs of fascism in India while both Longman and Moitra had denied of the allegations.

Moitra later filed a criminal defamation case against Sudhir Chaudhary after which Chaudhary on his daily prime time show accepted that only a part of Mahua Moitra's speech was broadcast and showed his regrets.

In 2012, Chaudhary was arrested, alongside his colleague, Sameer Ahluwalia on charges of extortion. This followed a complaint that had been filed by Congress MP and businessman, Naveen Jindal.

Jindal had alleged that the two journalists had tried to extort Rs. 100 Crore worth of advertisements from his company in exchange for dropping stories that linked the Jindal Group with a scam.
