BENGALURU: The Karnataka government declared on Monday, a 14-day lockdown in the state which will begin on Tuesday.

Essential services will remain unaffected, and customers will be able to shop between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

In response to the rising number of cases in the state, the Karnataka government, led by BS Yediyurappa, made the decision to impose "lockdown-like" restrictions.

BS Yediyurappa also declared that all shops would close at 10 a.m. Construction, manufacturing, and agriculture would be the only industries permitted. Public transportation will also be unavailable.

Karnataka had only registered 34, 804 new COVID-19 cases, with 20,733 in Bengaluru, when the decision was made.

With the new surge in cases, the state's COVID tally has risen to 13,39,201, with 2,62,162 active cases and 10,62,594 recoveries. On Saturday, the positivity rate in the state rose to 19.70 percent, with a case fatality rate of 0.41 percent.

Meanwhile, India recorded 3,52,991 new cases in a single day on Monday bringing the total number of infections to 1,73,13,163 since the pandemic began in January 2020.

This is the largest single-day increase in cases recorded by any nation so far, and the country's fifth consecutive day of grim global records. 2,812 deaths were reported for the first time. The total number of people death has risen to 1,95,123.
