MUMBAI: In response to a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the state government postponed state board exams for Classes 10 and 12, which were scheduled to be held later this month.

Class 12 board exams were set to begin on April 23 and Class 10 board exams on April 30.

"Imp Announcement: Given the current #COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra, we’ve postponed state board exams for class 10th & 12th. The present circumstances are not conducive for holding exams. Your health is our priority,” state school education minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted.

"Keeping in mind the schedule of entrance exams for professional courses,class 12th exams will be held by end of May, while 10th standard exams will be in June,” she said in another tweet.

The minister also stated that the health situation was being closely monitored and that new dates for the postponed exams would be announced soon.

The conclusion was taken after consultations with a variety of stakeholders, including students, teachers, parents, elected officials from different parties, academics, and tech giants, according to the minister.

"We'll also be writing to the CBSE, ICSE, IB, and Cambridge boards, asking that their exam dates be reconsidered," she said.

Gaikwad expressed gratitude to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray for approving the decision, saying that during the consultations, various alternative evaluation options were examined with students' health, well-being, and future in mind. "It seemed that postponing exams was the most practical option," she said.

According to reports, Maharashtra reported 63,294 new coronavirus cases today , the largest single-day increase since the pandemic began, bringing the total number of cases to 34,07,245.
