Imphal, August 30, 2019:

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Killing of Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu, has threatened to impose a 48-hour-long all Manipur general strike from 6 am of September 2 to 6 am of September 4. The JAC intends to go ahead with the 'bandh' if the Manipur State Government fails to fulfil the demands of the JAC at the earliest.

A press release issued by the convenor-in-charge of the JAC, L Gyaneshwari, conveyed to the Government that the JAC had demanded immediate release of its members, who are in police custody, as well as for the Chief Minister to head to Delhi and hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Central Government's investigating agency.

Moreover, the JAC has demanded the N Biren Singh-led Manipur Government to show proof that the case has indeed been handed over to the CBI.

The JAC had stated that during a Assembly session, the CM clarified that the CBI is yet to take over Babysana's case.

The JAC has explained that the general strike will not affect electricity-water related works, illness and religious rituals/ceremonies. The body further urged all student organisations, Meira Paibis, CSOs, clubs and organisations to extend all possible support to the agitation.
