Manipur CM N Biren slammed for 'kingly' picture with children kneeling & bowing

IMPHAL: A controversial picture of Manipur's chief minister N Biren Singh which is now doing the rounds on social media, has earned him the wrath of netizens.

 

The picture in question, shared by an unverified Facebook account bearing Singh's name on Thursday, shows the chief minister walking forward with hands folded, as young children dressed up in traditional attire lined up on both sides, kneeling and bowing, their heads touching the ground. Somewhat oddly, the picture was captioned: "I am really proud to see the culture and custom of the Manipuris."

 

Although Inside NE cannot independently verify the authenticity of this picture (or for that matter, even the account it was posted from), it was earned the wrath of netizens, who has slammed Biren for his 'king like' attitude.

"Mr CM if u want this type of custom and respect go to Thailand and become a king there not here, everything has its limit,u walked on the red carpet and the kids are on the dirty side, shame," wrote a Facebook user Lhangum Nu.

 

Another user, going by the name of Dr-Sapana Karam, said that "this is not Meitei culture."

 

"What is going on here?? You think this is culture and appreciating for this?? Felt bad for these innocent children. Dear Sir there must be several ways to show the respect or to welcome people. Even you think this is Meitei culture to bow down like this then we should think to change it rather than going back to those time, reviving those traditions where people bow down to King and Chief," she wrote in a post.

 

Yesterday, chief minister Biren had attended a public event in Imphal to accelerate the war against drugs and poppy plantations in the state.

 

Chief Minister Biren Singh had tweeted from the event. “Most grateful to the leaders of more than 32 tribes who took a collective pledge to support

#WaronDrugs"> 

campaign and stand against all illegal poppy plantations in the State, at a public convention held at BOAT, Imphal, today. “No to Poppy Cultivation ! Save Future Generations.”
