Manipur Girl Rescued from Human-Trafficker in Singapore

Churachandpur, January 3, 2019:

The local police at Churachandpur in Manipur, on 19 December last, received information that a 19-year-old girl had left for Singapore to be employed as a domestic help on December 7.

The girl had reportedly been sent through an agent named Ms. Chingneikim, a resident of Zoumunnuam village in Churachandpur.

According to reports, the victim could not adjust to the work environment and food habits in Singapore, leading to both mental and physical trauma.

On receipt of the report, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Churachandpur Police activated its sources and based on an inquiry, the agent who had sent the girl to Singapore, was identified. Early in the morning at around 6:30 am on December 21, the agent was picked up from her residence.

The agent was examined thoroughly and was made to interact directly with the agent in Singapore, who demanded Rs. 2 lakh in return for the girl.

After intervention from the local police authorities and the AGTU of Churachandpur, the Singapore agent agreed at Rs 75,000 for the safe return of the girl.

Accordingly, the said amount was sent by her parents on December 23. Meanwhile, the agent has been made to report to the AGTU of Churachandpur, on a daily basis.

The victim finally returned from Singapore on January 1 (at around 12:50 pm) and reached Imphal International Airport in the Manipur capital via Kolkata. She has finally been re-united with her family members.
