Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla inaugurated the 12th State Level Manipur Pineapple Festival in Churachandpur district on Friday.
Addressing the gathering during the occasion in Churachandpur’s Khousabung, Heptulla highlighted the importance the festival. She said that the festival’s main motive was to promote the pineapple farmers and provide them with a common platform to search for viable opportunities to sell their produce.
She said that since the past 11 years, the festival has been providing a platform to promote agro-tourism and added that it was surely moving towards achieving its set objectives.
Stressing on the potential of pineapple production in Manipur, she said that the fruit could rank as a good revenue earner for the State, adding that farmers from Khousabung and adjoining villages had been growing pineapple for over six decades and it had been a major source of their income.
The Governor also spoke on the need for Cold Storage facility to preserve the produce. She said that the State Government had already planned to provide cold storage facility at different places of the State. According to Heptulla, the facility would aid the farmers and their problems would be solved to a great extent.
It is to be mentioned here that pineapple is one of the most important horticulture crops in Manipur and a large number of people in the State are dependent on its production for their livelihood.
The Pineapple Festival is an important event for farmers as it showcases the products of the local farmers.
