The Manipur government’s 'Green Manipur Mission' recently received a boost from the Central Government. The Government of Manipur received Rs 309 crores as 'Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority' (CAMPA) fund from the Centre to undertake compensatory afforestation efforts and other activities to preserve the environment.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar disbursed the CAMPA funds amounting to Rs 309 crores to the Manipur Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar who received the cheque amount from the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar at a conference held at the Paryavaran Bhawan, Jorbagh Road, Aliganj, New Delhi on Thursday.
“It is a major boost for the environmental conservation and protection activities in the State to combat the issue of climate change,” Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar said.
The fund will be utilised for compensatory afforestation, wildlife management, forest fire prevention, soil and moisture conservation works in forests, voluntary relocation of villages from protected areas, management of biological resources and biodiversity, research in forestry and monitoring of CAMPA works and activities provided in the Compensatory Afforestation Fund (CAF) Rules, 2018, the minister said.
On June 22, this year, the Chief Minister officially launched the Green Manipur Mission by planting a tree sapling at the complex of Socio Economic and Environment Development Society (SEEDS) located near Saheibung village in Kangpokpi District.
The Mission has been introduced to develop and protect forests in each and every village of the State.
