Governor Heptulla said: “The day commemorates the Manipuris' unwavering bravery and patriotism during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. A small group of Manipuri soldiers battled against the might of the British Empire, establishing the historical reality that British rule was brought upon us by discord and rivalry among Manipuri princes who yearned for the throne. It should serve as a lesson to us all that when a country's citizens are divided and disorganised, foreign forces are more likely to interfere in its sovereignty.

“On this auspicious occasion, I appeal to all of us, regardless of caste, creed or religion to reaffirm our commitment to preserve and protect our country's sovereignty and dignity.”

Biren said: “On this day in 1891, brave Manipuri soldiers, led by Paona Brajabashi, fought a fierce battle against British forces at Khongjom, on the southern outskirts of Manipur Valley. In the fight against the enemy, Paona Brajabashi and hundreds of his brave soldiers died. Enemy forces were far more numerous and had far superior weaponry. Even though they knew they would be defeated, they confronted the mighty British forces in order to preserve their motherland's sovereignty. They died valiant deaths, leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration for future generations.”

Agriculture minister Oinam Lukhoi Singh and works minister Th Biswajit Singh also extended their warm wishes and greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of Khongjom Day.
