It may be mentioned here that the Assam Rifles had earlier seized five truckloads of Khangra wood, worth Rs. 20 lakhs, from Ukhrul. The logs were being transpoted from Nungshang and Singkap in Manipur. The trucks had no permit of such transportation. The 30 tonnes of logs were later handed over to the Forest department for further investigation.
Illegal transportation of wood logs has been a major issue in the state in the recent times. The wood that was seized from Ukhrul was, reportedly, obtained from the jungle near Kasom Khullen and was being transported to Tushar village (Ukhrul) for cutting and further selling at Imphal.
