Manipur: UNLF Cadre Nabbed by Security Forces

Moreh, July 15, 2019:

A combined team consisting of the Moreh Police and a column of 43 Assam Rifles personnel arrested a cadre of the Manipur-based proscribed separatist group United National Liberation Front UNLF near Haolenphai village in Moreh district of Manipur on July 14.

The cadre belonging to the banned outfit has been identified as Asem Anil Kumar alias Silngamba (aged 25), hailing from Imphal East district of Manipur. He was handed over to the Moreh Police Station for further necessary legal action.

The United National Liberation Front, also known as the United National Liberation Front of Manipur, is an insurgent group active in the state of Manipur in the Northeast India which aims at establishing a sovereign and socialist Manipur.

As per the globalsecurity.org, the oldest Meitei insurgent group in the state, the UNLF was founded in 1964 and is led by Rajkumar Meghen. The armed wing of this outfit is called the Manipur People's Army. The objective is to establish an independent and socialist state, a state the UNLF claims was "annexed" by India in 1949.
