IMPHAL: During the COVID-19 pandemic a hidden revolution in senior education is taking place at Chatric Kullen Village, along the Indo-Myanmar in Manipur and 150 kilometres from Imphal.

According to a report*, the village has over 100 households. However, there have been no positive cases in the village.

Sorinthan Soso Haorei, a youth who returned from Delhi due to the pandemic is the driving force behind the senior education project. He is working hard to introduce the village's elders to the world of literacy.

Manipur has a literacy rate of 76.94 percent, according to the most recent census. However, many people particularly the elderly, continue to be unable to read and write. Sorinthan ran into this situation when he returned to Chatric Kullen amid the Covid-19 last year.

According to the sources, Sorinthan he has one goal in mind and that is to spread education. His regular day begins with seniors' lessons at 6 a.m., followed by teaching at Oasis School, which he founded in February 2021. Later in the evening, he teaches high school students tutoring classes.

The elderly being taught learning numbers from one to a thousand, as well as alphabets and how to write their own names. The next exam will be their first in their lives for many of the elderly.

When he returned from Delhi, he discovered that the majority of the village's seniors live alone.

As is customary, their children have moved out once they have married. Their mental and physical health is being harmed by their loneliness, according to Sorinthan.

He established a school for them in order to bring them together and in the meantime teach them something while they interact. Sorinthan first convened a meeting in which he pitched the idea of the'school' inviting people to get involved. The concept was also well received by the local elders, who jumped on board right away.

The session starts at 6 a.m. but they all arrive by 5:30 a.m., Sorinthan added, describing their eagerness.

Sorinthan added that he plans to start classes for young and middle-aged couples are being planned, where they would receive value-based education on topics such as family development, parent-child healthy connections, husband-wife connections and so on.
