Manju Elangbam and Ahongshangbam Aneshori of Manipur Conferred with 'Ustad Bismallah Khan Yuva Puraskar'

Imphal, August, 19, 2019:

Two eminent artistes from Manipur -- Manju Elangbam and Ahongshangbam Aneshori Devi -- were among the 32 recipients of the Ustad Bismallah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2018 awards presented by the Governor of Manipur, Dr Najma Heptulla.

The awards were handed over at a glistering function held at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, (JNMDA) in Imphal, on Monday. In recognition of their outstanding talents in the field of Manipuri dance and traditional and folk music, two artistes from the state - Manju Elangbam and Ahongshangbam Aneshori Devi - were conferred the awards which are awarded in 4 different categories - theatre, music, dance and traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre and Puppetry.

Najma Heptulla said that art and culture of Manipur is second to none in India and congratulated the awardees, specially the two recipients from Manipur, expressing confidence that many more young talented artistes will earn name and awards in different fields in the years to come.

Manju Elangbam, a recipient of many other awards, including Manipur State Kala Akademi Yuva Award, 2012 was born in 1983 and learned Manipuri dance from N Amusana Devi and Jatindra Singh. He had also obtained PhD in Manipuri Dance from Visva-Bharti University. He was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2018 for his notable talent in Manipuri Dance.

Born on February 1, 1980 in Wangbal Thongjao in Manipur’s Kakching district Ahongshangbam Aneshori Devi bagged the award for her notable talent in the field of traditional and folk music of Manipur. She also bagged other awards, including Young Talent Award conferred by Manipur State Kala Akademi in 2014 and Young Talent Award by AMACSU in 2015. From her tender age, Aneshori learned folk music from Langathel Thoinu and Pena from Khangembam Mangi Singh and later completed Diploma in Manipuri dance and Nata Sankirtana from JNMDA, Imphal.

The “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” was instituted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in the year, 2006 to be awarded annually to young and upcoming artistes who have demonstrated notable talent in the fields of music, dance and drama. The Award is conferred upon artistes below the age of 40 years giving them national recognition early in their life so that they may work with greater commitment and dedication in their chosen fields.
