Shillong, December 24, 2019:

With Chistmas festivities already starting in several parts of the world in full earnest, locals of two far-flung villages in Meghalaya will finally have something to cheer about this year.

Christmas has arrived early in two villages of Meghalaya as Global Himalayan Expedition, provided solar power to 60 houses of remote unelectrified villages - namely, Rongmegre and Rongro Asimgre, in the South Garo Hills district of the State.

The village community participated with the Global Himalayan Expedition to bring light in a record 3 days. Thanks to the toil of and industriousness of these villagers, they will finally be able to celebrate Christmas amid lights, even as the world prepares to usher in Christmas with mega celebrations.

Meghalaya, which has a majority Christian population, is also preparing to celebrate the festival with pomp and show. Although the festive mood was dampened by the raging protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, and the state saw its fair share of clashes, and imposition of curfews -- things are slowly returning to normalcy.

Recently, the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the local markets in Shillong to take stock of the atmosphere of festivity in the capital city. "Visited Police Bazar Shillong to oversee the festive market in the heart of the city. Glad to witness large number of people busy shopping for Christmas. Met with business community at our popular sweet joint Delhi Mistan", the Meghalaya CM had tweeted.
