The Meghalaya Government is prepping to development new tourism infrastructure at the Umiam Lake View Point, 9 kms away from capital city Shillong.
Several top officials of the Government, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the area on August 17 and inspected the zone for the implementation of infrastructure which is expected to be a shot in the arm to the tourism industry in the 'land of clouds'.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister took to Twitter to announce the Government's plans to further develop the area as popular tourist destination by adding a rope way, restaurants and stalls.
Taking to Twitter, Sangma wrote, "Inspected the site for creating new tourism infrastructure at Umiam Lake view point, which includes rope way, restaurants and stalls for vendors."
As things stand, Umiam Lake is already one of the most popular destinations in the Northeast, and tourists flock there from all parts of the world to catch a glimpse of the majestic lake. Intended initially as a reservoir for a Dam, the Lake quickly became one of the most popular tourists’ spots in Shillong, becoming a prominent venue for kayaking, water cycling, boating and scooting. Tourists can also enjoy riding row boats, paddle boats, sailing boats, cruise boats and speed boats as well.
Due to its scenic beauty, Umiam lake is often compared to the beautiful lakes of Scotland.
