Khliehriat, September 16, 2019:

Meghalaya Police have arrested as many as 14 Nigerian nationals in East Jaintia Hills. They were travelling by a night super from Silchar to Guwahati.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, SP, East Jaintia Hills District, Vivekanand Singh said that the 14 Nigerian nationals were spotted while they were traveling to Guwahati from Silchar over the past four days.

Singh added, “They came from Nigeria to Dhaka in Bangladesh via air and traveled by road to the international border. Then they crossed Tripura and traveled to Silchar by road, proceeding to Guwahati and most probably they were on the way to Delhi.”

He further mentioned that any such trespass will be detected by the police and legal actions will be taken as per the procedure.

Meanwhile, cases have been registered against the arrested Nigerian nationals. Among these 14 Nigerian nationals, three have been booked under Khliehriat PS Case No. 140(9)19 u/s 14/14A/14C Foreigner's Act, six Nigerians booked under Lumshnong PS Case No. 40(9)19 u/s 14/14A/14C Foreigner's Act, three Nigerians booked under Lumshnong PS Case No. 41(9)19 u/s 14/14A/14C Foreigner's Act and two Nigerians booked under Lumshnong PS Case No. 42(9)19 u/s 14/14A/14C Foreigner's Act.

It is to be mentioned that the crossing of illegal migrants through different areas of the border in Northeast has turned into a major issue that led to the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Despite such implementations, Northeast has been facing the heat of illegal cross border issues.

Police is yet to disclose information as to why the Nigerian nationals were arrested.
