Meghalaya: Shillong Siblings Contribute Rs 50,000 Towards Chief Minister's Relief Fund

Shillong, August 8, 2019:

In a great show of charity, three siblings hailing from Bishnupur in Meghalaya capital Shillong have donated Rupees 50,000 to the Meghalaya Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, the eldest, Joyharvard N Marak, said, "I, along with my brother Tengsu N.Marak and my little sister Dede Richa N. Marak collected money from our pocket money, whatever we are given for our lunch and daily expenditure, and also some money given to us by relatives, including our aunt, Beauty Momin. We collected it, and gave it to the Chief Minister.."

"We decided to contribute the money because there are many in need of help and our CM is working to provide relief. Our mother told us that we should help people in their times of needs", he added.

It is to be mentioned that over 1.30 lakh people were affected by floods in the state’s West Garo hills district and parts of Khasi hills region. Even the

As many as 159 villages were inundated due to incessant rains and rising waters of the Brahmaputra and Jinjiram rivers that refused to recede.

The government has announced seven days of Gratuitous Relief (GR) for the flood-affected people of West Garo Hills district.

“Around 40 relief camps have been set up and the district administration is trying to evacuate people to the camps,” Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh said, adding 52 boats have been pressed into service.
