SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has said that it cannot increase the salaries of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers in the State.

 

Meghalaya Education Minister Lakmen Rymbui said that the Meghalaya government is “not in a position” to raise the salaries of SSA teachers in the State.

 

It is to be noted that the SSA teachers in the state have been demanding a hike in their salaries and set a deadline of February 18 for the State Government to meet their demands.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Meghalaya Government was struck by a financial crisis, with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma urging the Centre to release the State's share from central taxes to bail out the government.

 

The SSA teachers submitted a memorandum to Meghalaya Education Minister Lakmen Rymbui on February 9 last to demand an increase in their salaries.
