Military coup in Myanmar taking a toll on India

Military coup in Myanmar is taking a toll on it’s neighbouring country India. More than 450 Myanmar nationals have entered a village in Mizoram, adding to hundreds who had already arrived earlier.

 

More than a hundred Myanmar nationals had reportedly crossed the Tiau River and reached Farkawn village in Mizoram through a porous Indo-Myanmar border earlier. However, there are no details when the people entered India from then neighbouring Southeast Asian country.

 

Majority of the people who crossed over to India reportedly include Army, Policemen and Firemen of Myanmar.

It may be mentioned that the Union Home Ministry had warned four States bordering Myanmar, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to take measures to prevent refugees from entering the country except on humanitarian grounds.

 

Earlier this month, Myanmar asked India to return the police officers who crossed the border.

India shares a 1,643-kilometer border with Myanmar, and is home to thousands of refugees from Myanmar in different States.

 

The Myanmar coup began on the early morning of February 1 this year when democratically elected members of Myanmar's ruling party, the National League for Democracy, were deposed by the Tatmadaw Myanmar's military which vested power in a stratocracy. The Tatmadaw is the official name of the armed forces of Myanmar. It is administered by the Ministry of Defence and composed of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force.
