AIZAWL: Mizoram has got its first female Olympian who will also be the first Olympian to compete from the state in over two decades.

Hockey player Lalremsiami is preparing to compete in the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics, which will begin from July 23 to August 8.

The 21-year-old is one of eight debutants in the Indian women's hockey team's 16-member roster.

Besides Lalremsiami, Gurjit Kaur (defender), Udita (defender), Nisha (mid-fielder), Neha (mid-fielder), Navneet Kaur (forward), Sharmila Devi (forward), and Salima Tete (mid-fielder) are the other seven debutants.

Lalremsiami is also the first Indian woman hockey player to win the prestigious 2019 FIH Rising Star of the Year award.

“Hearty congratulations to Lalremsiami for making it in the Indian Women Hockey Team for #Tokyo2020 Congratulations to all the players and best wishes to the whole team! Come on Girls!”, Mizoram State Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte tweeted.

The Mizoram player got the news of her father's death the day before the Indian team was set to play Chile in the FIH Women's Series Finals in Hiroshima, Japan to spot in the final. Despite her personal sorrow, the striker back to the team for the squad's knockout games in order to keep India's Olympic spirits high.
