Mizoram Govt Seeks Help from Churches & NGOs to Fight AIDS

Aizawl, November 15, 2019:

In a bid to eradicate the HIV/AIDS menace in the State, the Mizoram government on Thursday sought help from civil society groups and churches to fight the menace of the deadly disease.

Mizoram Health minister, Dr R Lalthangliana invited leaders of the Central Committee of Young Mizo Association (Central YMA) at his office chamber to discuss the high prevalence of HIV in the state, official sources said.

It may be mentioned that 3 days before this, the minister also met leaders of Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of major churches in Mizoram, seeking their help to fight the menace.

During his meeting with the NGO leaders, Lalthangliana expressed concern about the high prevalence of AIDS in the state, the sources said.

According to a recent report, Mizoram reports nine positive cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) cases daily.

Mizoram has topped the list of States, with an HIV prevalence rate of 2.04% followed by two other north-eastern States: Manipur with 1.43%, and Nagaland with 1.15% prevalence rates.

To raise awareness against the deadly disease, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga had also launched an HIV/AIDS sensitisation campaign in Aizawl on October 11.
